Start Early
Our preschool program serves children as young as two and a half who are often having their first social and educational experiences outside their family, without the immediate support of their parents. In addition to the developmentally appropriate play-based learning experiences in all the major areas of development (social, emotional, physical and cognitive) that occur in all high quality early childhood programs, our teachers also begin to introduce some of the “habits of mind” (incorporated into all of our programs) researchers Costa and Kallick have found to be in common among successful adults. The development of these habits begins very early in a child’s life through their early social and investigative experiences. At the preschool level Somerset’s teachers are helping the children:
- Develop a positive feeling about school
- Learn to communicate their needs, preferences, and ideas to teachers and peers
- Learn to interact with other children in increasingly complex play situations
- Learn to respond appropriately to teacher guided learning activities
- Begin to become familiar with foundational mathematics and literacy concepts and skills
- Strengthen and refine large and small muscle abilities
- Persist in completing activities
- Manage impulsivity
- Gather information through all their senses
- Create
- Imagine and innovate
All of this learning is embedded in a rich physical and social environment, and meaningful, enjoyable play experiences.
